A new study published in the Evolutionary Psychology journal reveals that talented liars may be more intelligent than other people. Researchers found that cognitive ability is higher among people, who are skilled at creating spontaneous “nonsense explanations” for things they know nothing about.
The study states, “We find that those more skilled in producing satisfying and seemingly accurate [nonsense] score higher on measures of cognitive ability and are perceived by others as more intelligent. Overall, the ability to produce satisfying [nonsense] may serve to assist individuals in navigating social systems, both as an energetically efficient strategy for impressing others and as an honest signal of one’s intelligence.”
