Olympics Start Today: Opening Ceremony

Jul 23, 2021 | 5:17 AM

As the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Games officially get underway, today’s opening ceremony will look very different from previous Summer Olympics.

Rather than fan-packed stands, only a handful of seats will be filled at Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium, with a select number of officials, guests and members of the media in attendance.

Strict COVID-19 protocols at the Olympic Village also mean a smaller number of participating athletes, with the Canadian Olympic Committee saying only a small contingent of 30 to 40 athletes — roughly a tenth of the total delegation — will take part.

The Olympic gold medals contain 92.5% Silver, 6.16% Copper and 1.34% Gold. Each gold medal is worth $500. Bronze medals contain 97% copper, 2.5% zinc and 0.5% tin. They are each worth $3 according to businessinsider.com.

Vox says Olympic stars earn $37,500 for winning a gold medal, $22,500 for winning a silver medal and $15,000 for winning a bronze medal . Multiple medal winners could be taxed as much as 40% by the IRS.

The Times Union newspaper says NBC is not going to add crowd noise to their Olympic broadcasts. Fans won’t be in attendance at Olympic events due to the coronavirus.

NBC producer Molly Solomon says, “NBC will not be adding artificial crowd noise to the audio mix that America hears. We’re told that some of the sports venues may experiment with ambient crowd noise to generate atmosphere for the athletes. That will be a work in progress, and you’ll hear that on the mix that NBC uses.”
