The Vax Barbie

Aug 5, 2021 | 5:19 AM

Mattel is introducing six new Barbie dolls modeled after scientists fighting to end the coronavirus pandemic.

The “role model” dolls include Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine developer Sarah Gilbert.

She says, “It’s a very strange concept having a Barbie doll created in my likeness. I hope it will be part of making it more normal for girls to think about careers in science.”

Other dolls include emergency room nurses and doctors. Lisa McKnight, senior vice president and global head of Barbie and Dolls at Mattel, said, “Barbie recognizes that all frontline workers have made tremendous sacrifices when confronting the pandemic and the challenges it heightened.”

In 2019, as part of the company’s “Inspiring Women” series, dolls were made to honor Rosa Parks, Florence Nightingale, Helen Keller and Ella Fitzgerald.
