Russell County OPP today are thanking a quick-thinking bank teller in Rockland who realized a customer was being scammed and stopped the withdrawal of funds.
The incident was reported to police last Wednesday October 12, 2022.
Police say the victim was called by a so-called friend.
In fact, it was a fraudster attempting what is known as the emergency/grandparent scam.
The scam has the victim attend their local bank to withdraw a large amount of money.
In this instance, Russell OPP said the bank teller quickly realized what was happening and was able to educate the victim and prevent the scam.
Russell OPP said “fantastic job by the bank teller”.
Police did not identify the bank or the bank teller who thwarted the fraudster.
The OPP say there has been an increase in reports of emergency/grandparent scams
The scammers target vulnerable persons and seniors by playing upon their emotions and fear of a loved one being hurt or in trouble.
