Started and launched in 2012 by then Rockland resident Ron Pitre, the Backpacks for the Homeless initiative is marking 10 years of public service to the homeless in the Ottawa area with the launch of the 10th annual Backpacks for the Homeless campaign this year. After a halt to their operations last year due to Covid, this year’s fund raising is proving to be extremely difficult with only $4,000 raised out of a minimum $25,000 needed to get the job done. (Ideally $30,00 to cover all the other expenses). “We truly appreciate the community support we’ve had in the past but this year, we are reaching out for some extra help to make sure we serve the increased need” says Pitre, founder/director.
With 10 years of community service and supports to the homeless population of all ages in Ottawa, Backpacks for the Homeless wants to make this year’s campaign even more impactful with goals of raising $30, 000.00 for supplies, handing out backpacks to 1,500 men and women who find themselves alone and on the streets for Christmas. Funds are used to pay for the backpacks, a Tim’s card/McDonalds card and each backpack also contains essential items which are supplied by the public such as individuals, families, schools and work places.
To donate please go to www.backpacksforhomeless.ca. Pick-up/drop-off locations across the city of Ottawa as well as the city of Rockland, for those who wish to purchase the items and fill provided backpacks, are also available on the website.
The homeless population in Ottawa needs YOUR support now and we would not be able to do it without your help and donated funds for those in need in our community. More information can be found at www.backpacksforhomeless.ca.
