The Council of The Nation is considering a sharp increase in fines for illegal dumping of waste, currently capped at $150. A farmer recently found a trailer full of shingles and nails on his property and had to pay his employees for the cleanup.
A document found in the garbage would have identified the offender, but the possible fine was only $150, considered derisory.
The Director of By-laws and the Mayor agreed that this amount is outdated and that a significant increase would serve as a deterrent. A report will be presented to Council shortly.
