Victims of the Hawkesbury fire are now challenging the United Counties of Prescott and Russell at the Landlord and Tenant Board over the immediate termination of their leases.
The blaze, which broke out two weeks ago at 810 Portelance Street, displaced 58 tenants. Residents are also criticizing a receipt they were asked to sign, which they say unfairly limits their ability to retrieve personal belongings.
A paralegal representing the tenants argues that the units shouldn’t be considered abandoned, since the residents didn’t leave voluntarily.
The UCPR declined to comment on the dispute but confirmed that temporary accommodations for the tenants will continue.
