A Hawkesbury wrestling promoter is hoping to bring a larger-scale event to town this summer and is seeking municipal support to make it happen.
Mathis Myre, joined by colleague Eric Dobson, appeared before council on February 9 to outline plans for an expanded wrestling gala in early summer 2026. Myre has organized similar shows in the community for more than six years and told councillors the events attract families and younger fans while helping local businesses through increased restaurant traffic.
He addressed concerns about the sport’s image, stressing the shows are family-friendly and focused on entertainment. Myre said this year’s event would feature two internationally known former WWE performers, but the expanded lineup comes with higher costs. While last year’s show operated on an $8,000 budget, he estimates the upcoming event will require between $15,000 and $20,000, including about $10,000 for talent.
Mayor Robert Lefebvre thanked the organizers and noted the town’s history with wrestling events. Recreation Coordinator Ken St-Denis said discussions have been underway since October 2025, with potential timing around the Multicultural Festival in late June or early July, though no date has been set.
The Club Optimiste de Hawkesbury is also involved, and councillors Julie Séguin and Tony Tsourounakis spoke positively about the proposal. Talks between promoters and the Recreation Department will continue regarding scheduling and possible municipal support.
