Opposition to the Alto high-speed rail project is being organized in Prescott-Russell and Argenteuil under the Alt-NO banner. The group launched the altno.ca website, launched a petition and is recruiting volunteers to challenge the Ottawa-Montreal route. In particular, he opposes Bill C-15, which would facilitate federal expropriations. Alt-NO believes that the project lacks economic viability and underestimates the environmental and social impacts, instead focusing on improving the existing rail network.
In response, Prescott–Russell–Cumberland MP Giovanna Mingarelli said the project represents a “generational” opportunity for the region. She assures that citizens’ concerns will be taken into account and announces local round tables in March to continue the dialogue.
