A shortage of road salt in Ontario is prompting the Town of Hawkesbury and The Nation Municipality to reduce their consumption this winter. In Hawkesbury, public works uses more of a sand-salt mixture, while reserving the salt for busier main roads. The sand improves grip on ice and snow. At The Nation, the use of salt has also been reduced on roads less travelled. The authorities say they have sufficient reserves for the rest of the winter season.
