East Hawkesbury Mayor To Run For Re-Election

Robert Kirby says he will run for re-election in the October Ontario municipal elections, saying he still has “unfinished business” to complete for the community.

Kirby told The Review that securing natural gas service for East Hawkesbury remains one of his top priorities after a proposed project was scrapped in September 2025.

“We’re the only municipality in Prescott and Russell that does not have natural gas,” Kirby said, noting nearby communities in Ontario and Québec already have access.

Kirby said funding had previously been set aside for a project by Enbridge when former Bill Walker was in office, but the plan stalled after Walker retired and the funding was redirected.

Another major issue for the township is the proposed Alto high‑speed rail project. Kirby said he wants to continue advocating for residents as the project develops.

He said the municipality is concerned about potential damage to local infrastructure from construction and whether there will be funding to repair roads or other municipal assets.

“We’re a small municipality,” Kirby said. “There’s a limit to the taxes we can charge.”
