The Hawkesbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged an individual following a fraud investigation.
On Thursday March 12, 2026, an individual attended a local financial institution to cash a cheque. Staff determined that the individual used a fraudulent driver’s license, resulting in the account be frozen by staff.
On Wednesday March 25, 2026, the same individual re-attended the financial institution attempting to withdraw the funds from the account. As a result, the financial institution contacted the OPP and subsequently attended the financial institution.
As a result of the investigation, Dorice KPANGON, a 27-years-old, of Montreal, Quebec, was charged with the following Criminal Code offences:
· Identity Theft – obtain or possess another person’s identity information (two counts)
· Personation with Intent (identity fraud) (two counts)
· Possession of an identity document (two counts)
· Possession of a forged document with intent (two counts)
The accused was held for a bail hearing on Thursday March 26, 2026, at the Ontario Court of Justice in L’Orignal.
According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC), Canadians reported losing over $704 million to fraud in 2025. In 2025, Canadians reported over 8400 incidents of identity fraud, 3100 incidents of personal information compromises and 2800 phishing frauds. It is estimated that only 5-10% report frauds to the CAFC.
