A “water hammer” that occurred in February in the Champlain water system, during a response by The Nation firefighters near Cassburn Road and County Road 10, caused damage to two watermain fittings. The incident, caused by rapid opening and closing of valves, also resulted in discharges to the safety valves of some residential water heaters and affected the quality of the water in the area. The emergency repairs cost about $40,000 and the municipality is seeking to recover some of the costs.
