Homelessness has almost doubled in one year in Prescott-Russell. In April, 188 people in 128 households were homeless, compared to 98 people last year. Hawkesbury accounts for nearly 60% of cases. The increase is explained in particular by the cost of rent, the lack of affordable housing and the fire at the building at 810 Portelance Street. The UCPR also points to the lack of permanent shelter and the need for emergency or transitional housing with support services.
