Parents and guardians across Eastern Ontario are being warned that school bus transportation may not be available when students return to class, due to what school officials describe as “exceptional circumstances.”
In an email sent to parents, Lyne Racine, Director of Education and Secretary, said the Eastern Ontario School Transportation Consortium (EOSTC) may not be able to provide regular school bus service at the start of the new school year.
The potential disruption does not affect transportation services provided by van, according to the message.
Racine said the situation is temporary and is beyond the control of the Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO). The EOSTC and its member school boards are currently waiting for approval from the Ontario Ministry of Education that is required before school transportation services can be implemented.
School officials say they are hopeful the approval will be received and bus service can begin as soon as possible.
Schools Will Remain Open
If school bus transportation is not available, schools will remain open and students will attend according to their regular schedules beginning on the first day of classes.
Parents and guardians would then be responsible for arranging transportation between home and school until further notice.
The email says individual schools will provide parents with specific instructions to help ensure students arrive safely at school and return home safely at the end of the day.
Families are being asked to make the necessary transportation arrangements while following those instructions.
Decision Expected by August 24
Racine acknowledged that a disruption to school bus service could create significant challenges for families preparing for the return to school.
“We are aware of the impact this situation could have on your family’s plans and arrangements,” the message states, while adding that officials remain hopeful transportation services will be available as soon as possible.
Parents will be updated as the situation develops, with the school board promising to confirm no later than August 24 whether school bus transportation will be offered.
Families with questions are being directed to the Eastern Ontario School Transportation Consortium (EOSTC).
School officials apologized for the potential inconvenience and thanked parents and guardians for their understanding, cooperation and patience, saying they are working to find a solution as quickly as possible.
