The Eastern Ontario Health Unit has confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus of the year in the region. A bird had also recently tested positive, confirming the presence of infected mosquitoes. The risk of serious illness remains low for most people, but the EOHU recommends wearing long clothing, using bug repellent and avoiding dusk-to-dawn bites. Residents are also encouraged to remove any standing water around their property.
