One of the most recognizable buildings on Hawkesbury’s waterfront is a step closer to receiving official heritage status.
Hawkesbury Town Council voted September 14 to move forward with the process of designating Église Saint-Alphonse-de-Liguori at 470 Main Street East as a heritage property under the Ontario Heritage Act. The church is currently home to Paroisse Saint-Pierre-Apôtre.
The move comes during an important year for the parish, which is marking the 100th anniversary of the church’s reconstruction following a fire.
A delegation from the parish appeared before council on June 22 to request the heritage designation. A detailed report was also presented, outlining the building’s historical and architectural significance and identifying the features considered to have heritage value.
The proposed designation would help recognize and protect those heritage features for the future.
Council members expressed support for moving ahead with the process. The next step is the publication of a formal notice of intent, which will be sent to the parish and the Ontario Heritage Trust.
Once the notice is published, there will be a 30-day period during which objections can be submitted.
If no objections are received, council can move forward with a bylaw officially designating Église Saint-Alphonse-de-Liguori as a heritage property in the Town of Hawkesbury.
