Dr. Paul Roumeliotis Says Rapid Tests For Children Is Enough

Oct 6, 2021 | 6:36 AM

Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, chief medical officer of health with the Eastern Ontario Health Unit says the COVID-19 rapid tests for school age children is enough right now.

During an interview yesterday Dr Roumeliotis said using the rapid tests selectively will help, but he reminded residents most children who contract COVID-19 get it from unvaccinated positive cases.

Dr Roumeliotis said “we should not forget that testing screening and all these things that we do, do not replace prevention.”

Rapid COVID-19 testing is coming to schools in Ontario hot spots.

The province’s top doctor says that while widespread asymptomatic testing isn’t recommended for kids, a targeted approach can help prevent transmission in schools and licensed child-care centres.

Dr. Kieran Moore says the tests will only be used for unvaccinated, asymptomatic children who are not high-risk contacts of a case.

He says it will be up to local medical officers of health to decide whether to implement the program.
