Convoy Weekend: What You Need To Know

Jan 28, 2022 | 5:58 AM

Residents are being asked to avoid highways 417, 138 and 416 in the west end of Ottawa this weekend with a ‘Freedom Convoy’ of truckers expected to descend on the capital Saturday.

Yesterday Ottawa Police urged people to avoid the downtown core starting as early as today.

Police say they don’t yet know how many demonstrators to expect downtown, or how long they plan to stay. But they say they are preparing for all scenarios and are prepared for a fluid situation to change quickly.

The Canada Unity website says trucks travelling along the east route will arrive in Vankleek Hill on Friday.

The convoy is then scheduled to depart 21160 Service Road in Vankleek Hill at 10:30 a.m. Saturday for Ottawa.

The convoy of truckers opposed to vaccine mandates and other government policies.

The Canadian Trucking Alliance has made it clear it does not support “any protests on public roadways, highways and bridges.”

In a statement last weekend, the association noted the vast majority of the Canadian trucking industry is vaccinated.
