Racing To Save Lives: One Man’s Passion Saved His Life

Sep 5, 2023 | 8:38 AM
Racing To Save Lives took place over the weekend at Coolheat Comfort Systems in Cumberland, where $200, was raised for the Orleans-Cumberland Community Resource Centre. Owner Ray Richer, also noted that many people from across the region stopped in to learn more about the government rebates to switch to heat pumps, which can heat and cool your home at the same time.  “Many people are taking advantage of the government incentives to save money, with everything going up in price, families are looking for ways to conserve.” said Richer.
Funds from the event will be used towards Children & Youth Programs, counselling, and workshops. At the same time,  also held was the Stuff The Race Car food drive where a full trunk of food was collected for OCCRC.
“My goal is to show others it is possible to turn their life around using something they are passionate about. For me it is stock car racing. I began Racing To Save Lives in 2017 after multiple suicide attempts I turned my life around using stock car racing. I have done multiple events and fundraisers using my stock cars as a tool to get conversations started. I began sharing my story, helping others understand they are not alone and tools to help them cope.” said Derek Giffin from Coolheat Comfort Systems.
“I raced in the IMCA modified division at Edmonton International Raceway In Wetaskiwin, a professional series in Western Canada and popular all over the United States, also reaching an opportunity to race in the NASCAR Pintys Series. Canada’s highest level of stock car racing competition. I found myself over the last two years struggling to move forward, and cope with Child Loss. My four month old son Tunu (closely pronounced as ‘Two-New’) passed away Aug 16 2021. Thanks to Ray Richer, the owner of Coolheat Comfort Systems, and the staff, I am once again using stock car racing, and my passions to turn my life around, and continue sharing my story to help others understand they are not alone, and tools to cope.” Giffin added.
Ray Richer noted that Coolheat Comfort Systems has made it a mandate to give back, and plans to create a fundraising event benefiting Clarence-Rockland.
