Members of the Russell County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating a possible fraudulent pavement company and want to warn residents.
On June 4, 2024, at approximately 5:20 p.m., officers responded to a call in Bourget regarding a possible fraudulent paving company. The complainant informed police that at 3:00 p.m. a male described as being Caucasian, with blondish hair, wearing a white shirt and slacks came to door. The male informed the complainant that he could repave her driveway for $4,000.
Shortly after, a crew showed up and started to prepare to complete the work at which time the complainant noticed that the employees were using her gardening tools to do the job. The complainant spoke to the employees, who then left, stating it was too much trouble. Luckily, no money had been exchanged yet. There was no company name on any of the vehicles and no business card was provided. The Caucasian male was driving an unknown white pick-up truck.
The OPP would like to remind people to beware of possible fraudulent companies. Here are some quick tips:
- Don’t rush into a deal, specially when it sounds to good to be true.
- Don’t sign a contract without an expert opinion.
- Be suspicious when someone asks you for money before the work is started.
- Do you research. A good company will be registere d with the Better Business Bureau.
- Check the Canadian Anti-Faud Center for possible current frauds at Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca)
