A new provincial tax policy could help Prescott and Russell better meet affordable housing needs. At their last meeting, the United Counties of Prescott-Russell reviewed a report explaining that the province has created a property tax subclass for “affordable rental housing.”

This measure allows municipalities to provide direct tax support for both new projects and existing housing units and to tailor the approach to meet their needs.

Russell Mayor Mike Tarnowski believes the measure provides a concrete and flexible tool to support local projects. Chief Financial Officer Valérie Parisien will present a detailed report to the board on September 24, in order to prepare a possible resolution before the September 30 deadline.
