The Council of the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry has passed a by-law allowing them to reduce the property tax rate for existing or future multi-residential affordable housing by up to 35%.
This measure builds on a recent provincial amendment. While all councillors agree on the importance of supporting affordable housing, some are concerned that the tax burden will be shifted to other taxpayers.
The final decision on the application of the reduced rate will be taken in future budgets.
