40 People Left Homeless After Hawkesbury Fire – Past Fires Are NOT Related According To…

More than 40 people are homeless after the suspicious fire that ravaged a 30-unit apartment building on Portelance Avenue in Hawkesbury on Saturday night. No serious injuries were reported, but the third floor was completely destroyed. The Red Cross is helping more than 25 households with shelter, food and emergency services, while evacuated residents are scattered in hotels. Mayor Robert Lefebvre said the city and the United Counties will have to assess the long-term support needed for these families who don’t know if they will be able to get their belongings back or return home.

The OPP say the recent fires in and around Hawkesbury are unrelated. In the face of much speculation via social media, the OPP reiterated yesterday that investigations are continuing, but that each incident is isolated and that there is no risk to public safety. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Hawkesbury OPP Detachment.
