PM Defends Alto High-Speed Rail Project

By Derrick Scott Apr 8, 2026 | 5:40 AM

Mark Carney defends the high-speed rail project between Toronto and Quebec City, saying it would create more than 50,000 jobs and generate more than $35 billion for the economy. However, the project is met with growing opposition, especially in communities affected by expropriations. The premier maintains that the route would only require a right-of-way of about 10 metres and that the owners concerned would be compensated. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling for the project to be abandoned.
