A blue-green algae bloom has been confirmed in the southeast area of Mill Pond in Alexandria, following water testing conducted by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.
According to the Township of North Glengarry, test results show the levels are below Health Canada’s recreational water guideline. However, the Eastern Ontario Health Unit is recommending that residents take precautions and avoid contact with visible algae accumulations and discoloured water.
Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, are common during this time of year and are more likely to develop in calm water combined with high temperatures.
Residents are advised to avoid areas with discoloured water, surface scum, or visible algae buildup. Children and pets should also be kept away from affected areas, as they can be at greater risk of exposure.
Direct contact with algae can cause itchy or irritated eyes and skin, while swallowing large amounts of contaminated water can potentially cause flu-like symptoms.
The bloom is being monitored by the Township of North Glengarry, the Eastern Ontario Health Unit and the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.
Island Park Beach Also Posted Unsafe
Separately, Island Park Beach is currently posted as unsafe for swimming due to elevated bacteriological levels. This advisory is unrelated to the blue-green algae bloom at Mill Pond.
