Hundreds of citizens from Ontario and Quebec gathered Saturday in Rigaud to oppose Alto’s high-speed rail project. Farmers and landowners fear the loss of farmland, the division of their properties and an increase in operating costs. In addition, according to Radio-Canada, compensation could reach up to 350% of the market value of the land in question, taking into account crop losses. Alto says it wants to limit the impact of the route, which is to be clarified this fall between Montreal and Ottawa.
