East Hawkesbury Township will have a new mayor following Monday’s municipal election, with Richard Sauvé winning the race to lead the municipality for the next four years.

According to unofficial results released by the Township following the October 26 election, Sauvé defeated Daniel Journeaux to become the municipality’s next mayor.

The race took an unexpected turn in August when longtime Mayor Robert Kirby withdrew his candidacy. However, because his withdrawal came after the official nomination deadline, Kirby’s name still appeared on the ballot.

Sauvé’s victory marks a change in leadership for East Hawkesbury, although several familiar faces will be returning to council.

Tranchemontagne Re-Elected Deputy Mayor

Incumbent Deputy Mayor Jacques Tranchemontagne has secured another term after defeating challenger Marc Bizaillon.

Meanwhile, voters did not have to choose candidates for the township’s three council seats, as all three positions were filled by acclamation.

Monique Desjardins, Kathleen O’Connell Renaud and Karina Sauvé will serve as councillors for the next four years.

With a new mayor, a returning deputy mayor and three acclaimed councillors, East Hawkesbury’s next council is now set.

The Township had not released vote totals for the mayoral or deputy mayoral races as of Monday evening.

All election results remain unofficial until formally certified by the Township.
